Rory MacDonald's practice brings ceramics within the realm of public activism.He produced street tags of traditional blue and white Willow pattern during a residency at Medalta in Canada. In r project called Curb Work, he drew attention to the deterioration of curbsides and sidewalks in downtown Regina. Repairing the fissures with exquisitely decorated ceramic patches, his strategic activism highlighted the deterioration but improved the urban streetscape. Kind og like a clay version of British artist 'Moose' who uses urban grime as his medium for stencilling interventions.Thanks to Carole Epp for bringing him to my attention.

Whilst delivering a large platter yesterday to Adelaide's Feldenkrais queen I discovered (to my surprise) a bunch of work she had commissioned or purchased that I had completely forgotten about.

The best part about this was that all of the stuff was in use, and in some queer way seemed to have always been in this kitchen.It made me remember why I made things (pots).

So if you are not part of the (physical)making process,who's work is it?

Apparently there was some discussion at the Manly Gallery opening last week vis-a-vis the provinence of works designed by an artist (craftsperson,designer,designer-maker, take your pick) but fabricated by someone or something else,Whether it is a question of acknowledging the other parties involved in the process or asserting that unless the artist is at least responsible for a certain percentage of the making, I'm not sure.

It's a hoary old argument that has been going on since the Greek pot painters were elevated above the throwers.Even in the 'ART' world as late as 1966 the idea of making being outsourced was questioned.(Sorry, it's Wiki)

"While sculptor Donald Judd executed early works himself (in collaboration with his father, Roy Judd), in 1964 he began delegating fabrication to professional artisans and manufacturers based on his drawings.

The works that Judd had fabricated inhabited a space not then comfortably classifiable as either painting or sculpture and in fact he refused to call them sculpture, pointing out that they were not sculpted but made by small fabricators using industrial processes. That the categorical identity of such objects was itself in question, and that they avoided easy association with well-worn and over-familiar conventions, was a part of their value for Judd. He displayed two pieces in the seminal 1966 exhibit, "Primary Structures" at the Jewish Museum in New York where, during a panel discussion of the work, he challenged Mark di Suvero's assertion that real artists make their own art. He replied that methods should not matter as long as the results create art; a ground -breaking concept in the accepted creation process."

The fact that this argument is still around in the craft arena raises interesting questions about what we used to call the art/craft debate.

Procession of Princes

This mural is painted on tiles made from Meissen porcelain and 101 metres long. It depicts successive generations of Wettin rulers as a mounted procession.The Procession of Princes was originally painted between 1870 and 1876 by artist Wilhelm Walther to celebrate the 800 year anniversary of the Wettin Dynasty. It replaced an older painting of a procession that had been painted almost 300 years earlier with limewash. Due to the long exposure to natural elements the original painting had become mostly invisible. For the new mural, Wilhelm Walther employed the sgraffito technique on a stucco base, which allowed for great detail. The artist portrayed himself as the last person in the procession. n order to make the Fürstenzug weather-proof, the sgraffito decoration was replaced between 1906 and 1907 with close to 25,000 ceramic tiles from the porcelain manufacturer Meissen. The tiles miraculously survived the devastating aerial bombardments of February 1945.So it goes...

Home Front is an exhibition by four Adelaide artists, Helen Fuller, Chris De Rosa, Lesa Farrant and Maria Parmenter whose practises draw from the forms, surfaces and patterning of the domestic realm. The works in the exhibition blend the disciplines of drawing, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture.

It is a terrific gallery with a great little craftart outlet featuring the work of various makers from around the traps.

I visited Limoges recently but unfortunately the Porcelain Museum was closed for renovations.
Luckily, around the corner and up the road there was a terrific show on featuring Paul Scott,Richard Shaw, Robert Dawson and a bunch of other ceramic luminaries. The work was displayed quite informally to the point where you could have (almost) touched it.Here is the blurb;

The Fondation Bernardaud presents an exhibition devoted to decorative art. American for the most part, several artists will be making their debut in France. Some have already earned an international reputation and many are creating works especially for the occasion.

This exhibition presents artists who make use of ceramics to create decorative art. Today, all artists- and not just ceramic artists - are free to use ceramics to express their art. In very different registers, each artist offers a different take on decorative art. Some set out deliberately to subvert everyday objects, others exalt them in the purest trompe-l'oeil tradition. Some conduct a reflection focused on architectural or decorative aspects, others parody the canons of classical sculpture. The actors are ready and the stage is set - let the play begin !

Over the last few years there has been a significant revival of interest in enamel with a number of contemporary jewellers developing new ways of working with enamel that enable them to create exciting and innovative work. This exhibition showcases the work of thirty jewellers of international standing who, through a varied set of practices, take enamel well beyond its traditional boundaries. The title, Surface and substance, has been chosen to emphasise that while this is clearly an exhibition that focuses on the use of vitreous enamel - the surface - of equal importance is the ‘substance’ that underpins the work on display; the thinking and the research, which along with the obvious material knowledge and skill, is evident in the striking and individual pieces on show.

The Narrative Knot is the Australian Ceramics Association's Biennial Exhibition 2011. Curated by Gerry Wedd.
The idea of the 'narrative knot' implies interlocking or interweaving stories or, and about, making ceramics. Artists will explore the idea of objects with stories to tell, whether it be writing and drawing of stories on the ceramic surface or the effects of flame and glaze on a fired surface telling the story of making, firing and the maker.
Selecting the works for this show was a trying process,after all objects all have a narrative potential.
In the end selection was done on a gut reaction; trying to avoid issues of personal taste.I suppose part of my thinking was in re-positioning these objects as being texts so that their story-telling potential would become a prime a consideration for the viewer.
In conjuction with this exhibtion is PROmotion, curated by Dee Taylor-Graham that celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Journal of Australian Ceramics.

“THE CHINA SYNDROME”

This exhibition explores the significance of the historical China Cabinet figurine in contemporary Western culture. Contemporary figurines can act as a tool for exploring the implications of international exchange as well as the forms and images made possible by changes in information technology, material science and industrial techniques.

In a contemporary context, the Syndrome can serve as a metaphor for exploring the unfettered interaction of notions of beauty and preciousness in a digital age which mutates aesthetic ideals at a prodigious rate.

The project will speculate on the possible relationship between Astro Boy and Dresden figurines; the significance of Copeland blue and white patterns in relation to soft porn imagery and will question whether the Psycho Killer Clown really murdered Beatrix Potter’s Bunnykins.

I watched Annie Hall again the other night.We used to have a Woody Allen tape at Jamboree (the studio I shared for ten years) which still makes me smirk just thinking of it. Anyway I was reminded of the joke which is normally attributed to either Groucho Marx or Freud....

The... the other important joke, for me, is one that's usually attributed to Groucho Marx; but, I think it appears originally in Freud's "Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious," and it goes like this - I'm paraphrasing - um, "I would never want to belong to any club that would have someone like me for a member."

Mark Making brings together nine Australian artists whose work feature diverse techniques that demonstrate their own unique maker’s marks. In ceramics, the makers mark is heightened, as the form can feature the mark of the hand, as well as how it is then decorated.
A beautiful exhibition that features some of the most interesting artists working in ceramics today. All are held in public collections and have perfected their chosen technique, and are known for their individual style of mark making.

A few years ago I stumbled across an intriguing show at the teriffic Gallery Funaki in Melbourne.
The works were varied and in unexpected materials.
I was particularly taken with a tablecloth with the cup ring stains embroidered into the linen (?) as both decoration and echo/reminder.

In her latest work, Dutch artist Manon van Kouswijk explores the idea of a strand of beads as a cycle without a clear beginning or end. Her recent book, Hanging Around / the pearlchain principle shows that the basic principle of the beaded necklace can be found in sources from peas in a pod and mathematics to Supernova 1987A, described by scientists as ‘pearls on a cosmic necklace’. New Zealand born, Melbourne based jeweller Julia deVille in her first South Australian solo exhibition,Nevermore. deVille explores life and death working with traditional gold and silversmithing techniques combined with materials that were once living such as jet, human hair and taxidermy.While these works embrace the Goth-schlock aesthetic (in a good way) the work in the big room at the Jam Factory is more cool and distanced.

At a time when the Gothic is all around us, curator Wendy Walker has invited craft practitioners, designers and visual artists Roy Ananda, Kirsten Coelho, Nico Kelly, Khai Liew, Jessica Loughlin, Sean O'Connell, Amy Patterson, Mary-Jean Richardson and Julia Robinson to create new works based on historical and contemporary Gothic literature such as The Well by Elizabeth Jolley and work by HP Lovecraft.
