Girls at our best....

The urn below features a bunch of famous and not so famous women surfers. It has been interesting looking over the history of the sport to see the fluctuations of representation of women in 'surf culture'.
There is a conspicuous dip in images of girls actually surfing during the 'brown rice-country soul ' period of Australian surfing. Tellingly, one of the only images I could find of a couple of famous women surfers was in a great shot of Nat with a group of girls adorning his Merc from Witzig's great little book.

Hi Gerry, I like the decorative pots with the female surfers, interesting recognition of the times.

Yeah - I've had trouble finding images too! I find LOADS from the USA, but from Australia... not so much. It's frustrating and confusing and I find it hard to 'believe' the implications of the absence of these images. Where are all the women folk? They were around the culture of surfing, but remain completely absent in the representations.

This is a rad project!
